Trust and Ownership as the Foundation

Müller-BBM Rail Technologies Awarded the FAIRMOTION Seal

In 2026, Müller-BBM Rail Technologies was awarded the FAIRMOTION price.

In this interview, Managing Director Prof. Dr. Stefan Lutzenberger explains what defines the Müller-BBM company model and why trust, commitment, and a passion for technological innovation are central to the way the company works.

Prof. Dr. Lutzenberger, What does receiving the FAIRMOTION award mean to you personally?

To me, this award is a recognition of the Müller-BBM company model. A key part of that model is giving our employees the freedom to take ownership of their work, contribute their skills and ideas, and actively shape the company. Just as important is treating one another with respect and appreciation.

I am especially proud of how we have grown and evolved together over the past few years. Our team has developed a wide range of technical solutions and supports our customers with tremendous dedication. I am particularly pleased with the positive feedback we receive from our customers. It shows that our work delivers real value in day-to-day operations. That is why I see this award as recognition of the entire team.

Ownership works best when we know we can rely on one another.

Which values are most important to you as Managing Director, and how do they shape everyday work?

Motivated employees are a company’s most valuable asset for me. It is important that we believe in a shared goal and that everyone can identify with the work they do. To make that possible, employees need trust and the freedom to take responsibility and contribute their own ideas to help move the company forward.

Reliability is equally important to me. When we discuss something and make a commitment, we follow through. If circumstances change, we need to address that openly and realign as needed. Personal responsibility works best when we know we can rely on one another.

That also means treating each other with respect, sharing knowledge, and being willing to support one another.

How do new employees experience your company culture?

They experience it through direct communication and the opportunity to get involved from the very beginning. If someone has an idea or a question, they can raise it directly. Each new employee is paired with an experienced colleague who serves as a mentor and supports them as they get started.

Our work provides plenty of opportunities to apply individual strengths and develop solutions. At the same time, we place great value on sharing knowledge and passing on experience. We work independently and coordinate closely whenever collaboration helps us achieve a better result.

Our flexible approach to working hours and remote work is another expression of this trust. What matters is that we fulfill our responsibilities reliably and maintain strong collaboration within the team and with our customers.

Different perspectives and constructive criticism help us find better solutions.

How do you stay connected with what matters to your employees?

We regularly connect through team meetings and virtual coffee chats. Informal conversations in particular provide space to discuss topics beyond immediate project responsibilities.

In addition, our annual employee conversations give us dedicated time to discuss professional and personal development, job satisfaction, and mutual feedback.

An open culture of communication is very important to me. Different perspectives and constructive criticism help us find better solutions. That means listening to one another, taking feedback seriously, and always communicating with respect.

Do you see the award primarily as recognition or as motivation to keep improving? Where would you like to develop further?

Both. It validates some of the fundamental principles behind the way we work together, while also giving us an opportunity to reflect on where we can continue to improve.

I would like to make our shared goals and successes even more visible in our day-to-day work. With so many technical challenges and customer projects underway, everyone should be able to see how their individual work contributes to the company’s progress.

Part of that means sharing milestones and customer feedback across the team. We should also make a conscious effort to take time together to recognize what we have achieved and celebrate our successes.

I want everyone to be able to contribute their ideas, make decisions within their area of responsibility, and make a real impact.

As the company grows, what do you most want to preserve?

The ownership our employees take in their work and the high level of motivation they bring to it. I want everyone to be able to contribute ideas, make decisions within their area of responsibility, and have a real impact.

As we grow, it will be important to maintain direct communication, strong knowledge sharing, and mutual support. I want the way we work together to remain personal, dependable, and respectful. Everyone should feel that they are part of something bigger and enjoy achieving meaningful results together.

What would you hope an employee tells a friend about why they enjoy working here?

“I do meaningful work, have the freedom to take ownership, and can make a real impact with my ideas. We support one another and treat each other with respect. We develop exciting technologies, and that’s what inspires me.”

Thank you very much, Stefan Lutzenberger, for the interview.
